Spotify Playlist: Underrated 80’s

Underplayed 80’s on Spotify

My favorite 80’s new wave songs that I think are underrated, underplayed & overlooked, inspired by this time that I was standing in line at Petco and heard Heaven 17’s “Let Me Go” and thought “now there’s an 80’s jam I don’t hear nearly enough!”

When to play:  Occasions that call for something more obscure than your typical “Hungry Like a Wolf” / “Take On Me” set, but familiar enough to keep you air-synthing along.

What made the cut:  Minor hits by bands whose bigger hit(s) get all the attention (“Talk Talk” by Talk Talk, “Dangerous Type” by the Cars, “Stop” by Erasure, “Red Skies” by The Fixx); one-hit wonders that usually don’t make it to one-hit wonder compilations (“Nowhere Girl” by B-Movie, “Let Me Go” by Heaven 17, “Never Say Never” by Romeo Void, “The Politics of Dancing” by Re-Flex).

What didn’t make the cut: I used to love sporadically hearing “Major Tom (I’m Coming Home)” by Peter Schilling, until Shiny Toy Guns re-popularized it when their cover was used in a car commercial a couple years ago.  Otherwise, I think it would have made a nice addition.
